Biographies
Edward Sharpe born in Brigg, Licolnshire 1799 to John & Hannah Sharpe. 1821 at Leicester Assizes found guilty of Grand Larceny and sentenced to 7 years transportation to van Diemens Land. Physical description, body marks: Man on left arm Scar high up on forehead, Eyes: D Grey, Hair: Brown. Sent to hulk Justitia moored on River Thames at Woolwich, hulk report "orderly". August 1821, either on Monday the 13th or Thursday 16th was one of 160 convicts taken on board the ship Claudine for transportation to VDL. December 19th 1821 one of 40 convicts landed at Port Dalrymple (George Town). 159 convicts survived the voyage, convict Thomas Bolton, aged 40 died 3rd December. Edward Sharpe was assigned to a retired magistrate Thomas Archer of Woolmers at Longford and in 1824 was twice punished by flogging, his first offence: 5th July 1824 was Disobedience of the order of Thomas Archer Esquire and absenting himself from his master's Service, 50 lashes. His second offence a month later: 7th August 1824 Neglect of duty and stealing 8lbs of pork, 100 Lashes.He was charged a third time in 1827 for assaulting George Pyle and was reprimanded. 1829 he gained his Freedom Certificate and on 10th April 1837 he married Jessie Patterson native of Edinburgh, Scotland, in Launceston. They later moved to Victoria and had 6 children, in 1869 Edward Sharpe died in Buninyong and is buried in Geelong West cemetery.
