Biographies

William & his brother Thomas were court martialled at the Salford Barracks in Manchester, England. William received 14 yrs & Transportation while Thomas was sentenced to 252 & 84 days in different prisons.
The HMAS Warrior served as a prison hulk at Woolwich from 1840-1857. 200 convicts were transferred from the "Warrior" hulk to the convict ship "China" at Woolwich, London for transport to Bermuda. This included William Tanian.

Folios 28-30: Surgeon's general remarks. Two hundred convicts were embarked from the Warrior hulk at Woolwich, but the surgeon did not examine them previous to their embarkation as he had no orders to do so. According to the surgeon there were five convicts in whose cases his attention was directed by a note from the surgeon of the Warrior to whom he objected as not in a fit state of health to bear a voyage to Bermuda and were exchanged for others.

Medical journal of the China, convict ship, for 7 March to 16 May 1845 by Alexander Kilroy, surgeon superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in conveying convicts to Bermuda.
Folio 9: case no 14, William Tanian, aged 22, convict, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, fever, with headache, pain in the back and in the left side of chest with dyspneoa, bowels costive; put on sick list 1 April 1845, discharged 28 April 1845 from the list.
The Neptune 2 arrived in Bermuda on 5 April 1849 and departed Bermuda on 24th of April 1849 bound for Cape Town. William Tanian was aboard the Neptune 2. On 18 July 1849 the Neptune 2 made a stop at Pernambuco on the east coast of Brazil to replenish water and supplies. It departed on the 12 August 1849. On 19 September 1849 the Neptune 2 arrived, entered and anchored in Simon's Bay (now Simonstown) in Cape Town. There were 282 convicts on board, after 18 died at sea. After 5 months at anchor on 21 Feb 1850 the Neptune 2 departed Cape town for Hobart Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land). On 5 Apr 1850 the Neptune 2 arrived in Hobart Tasmania. All, bar one convict, received conditional pardons on arrival in Hobart.
Ellen Keeley, age 22, a general servant from London arrived on 28 Oct 1850 in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia on "Northumberland" as an assisted passenger. The "Northumberland" departed London on 8 July 1850. It reached Port Adelaide on 13 October 1850, before travelling onto Melbourne.
William and Ellen married in Melbourne, Victoria 1852. Victoria Marriage Registration Number 41353 in Year 1852.
William and Ellen moved to Heathcote, Victoria where William worked as a miner.
They had 9 children, one of whom was stillborn. The children are Mary Ceclia (1853-1866), unnamed stillborn (1855-1855), Mary (1855-1920), Sarah (1856-1937), Thomas (1857-1858), Ellen (1859-1936), Anna Maria (1861-1939), Patrick Costerfield (1864-1945) and John (1866-1936).
William died on 24 August 1866, aged 46, in Heathcote, Victoria, Australia. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Heathcote Public Cemetery. William's name was incorrectly spelt on Victoria BDM. It was listed as William Taman. Death Registration Number 8189/1866. It shows his fathers name as Thomas Tanian and his mothers name as Sarah Kealey and place of birth Galaway.
Ellen died on 14 February 1890, aged 59, in Heathcote, Victoria, Australia. She was buried in an unmarked grave in Heathcote Public Cemetery. Victoria Death Registration Number 2430 in Year 1890.
