Biographies
Jacob Cliff was born 1805 in Morcott, Rutland, England. Parents were Isaac Cliff and Elizabeth Andrews. Jacob was ninth of 13 children, 3 of whom died in infancy. Jacob worked as a Farm Labourer. In 1850-51, Jacob was arrested on four separate occasions for breaking, entering and stealing whilst armed, property from four different properties. He was imprisoned after each conviction for increasing lengths of time. All of his victims were farmers with large acreages of land and who employed a number of live-in staff. It's possible that Jacob was in the employ of his first victim, Robert Shelton, as he was working for the Shelton family on their farm on the 1841 census. It's possible that changes in farming in the early-mid 1800s due to the industrial revolution and mechanization made it difficult for Farm Labourers to get work. No evidence for the reason for Jacob's turning to crime in mid-life has yet been found but it may have been desperation.
After four convictions and Jacob returning to crime as soon as he was released each time prompted the authorities to sentence him to transportation in 1851. He was transported on the ship Adelaide in 1855. He received a Conditional Pardon in November 1857. He remained in Western Australia, passing away in 1883 aged 77 years. He was the cousin of my great-great-great-grandfather.
