Biographies

b.1832 Hertford, UK
d.1910 Wanganui, NZ

James Laurence Beck was convicted of wounding with intent - the victim was a gamekeeper, the place a pheasant covert, and the time, late at night on 24th Dec. It leaves little room for doubt that he and his two confederates were out poaching for their Christmas dinner :-)

Although having been the one who urged his fellow poachers to "Shoot, shoot!" James must have been a model convict, because despite his 15yr sentence he was given a ticket of leave only 4 years after his 1853 conviction, and a conditional pardon in 1860. He married a 13yo girl in 1863 and they had one son, James Laurian Beck. He (James Laurian) became a noted music teacher in NZ (Wanganui and Christchurch) and the father of three professional musician children, one of whom in particular was feted as a child prodigy.

(James Laurian was my g.grandfather.)
