Biographies

James Oswald was born in 1817 in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England.
Bridget was born in 1820, also in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England.
James and Bridget married on Christmas Day 1841.

They had 2 children together, James and Susannah. James must have passed away at a young age, however there are no death records for him.

Whilst James lead a quiet life as a tailor, Bridget was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Van Diemens Land, and took her daugther Susannah, who was around 7 years of age, with her.

James did not follow her.

James died in January 1880. aged 63, in his native place.
In February 1850, Bridget Oswald was tried for Larceny and sentenced to 7 years transportation to Van Diemens Land. She allegedly stole two glasses from a pub in Carlisle.

In her convict record she is described as follows:

Complexion: Ruddy
Hair: Light Brown
Forehead: High
Eyebrows: Brown
Eyes: Grey and squints
Nose: Medium
Mouth: Wide
Chin: Round
Marks: Small brown mole on upper lip. Rose, shamrock and thistle tattoo on left arm.
Religion: C. of. E (Church of England)
Read/Write: Yes can R. & W.
Native Place: Cockermouth, England.

Bridget had several offences while in Van Diemens Land, of which she was sentenced to 3 months hard labour each time. Her offences were the following:

6 October 1851 Absent without leave and falsely representing herself to be a free woman
19 October 1852 Drunkeness
3 January 1853 Refusing to work and using threatening language
25 July 1853 Having sexual intercourse
27 April 1855 Out after hours


On the 4th May, 1855, Bridget married George Layton in Canning Street, Launceston, a batchelor and his occupation was a Tailor.


On the 12th May, 1894, Bridget married George Sharman, a Farmer, at the York Street Baptist Church. She was 70 years of age, and George was 60.

in June, 1900, Bridget was charged with being insane and was remanded to the New Norfolk Asylum. Bridget died on the 8th April, 1906 at the same Asylum in New Norfolk. This was later known as Willow Court Asylum.
