Biographies
Sentenced to death in March 1804 were Susan Williams and Diana Bent, for burglary. Diana Bent had been convicted of a similar offence two years previously. Her sentence was commuted to life in the Colonies and she set sail for Australia, along with her accomplice Susan Williams, on 31st August 1805 aboard the 'William Pitt' captained by John Boyce, with 114 other female convicts and one male a certain Mr. Henry Perfect. They arrived on 11th April 1806. They both tried to delay their fate by pleading pregnancy but a jury of matrons was summoned who deemed that they may have been pregnant but were not 'quick with child'. Diana was one of only three prisoners who was not left at Port Jackson but accompanied the ship as far as Port Dalyrimple, in what is now Tasmania, on the homeward journey.
