Biographies
Reuben Thorley was born at Honeywall, Stoke Upon Trent on the 12th Jan 1812 the son Of Simeon & Sarah Thorley ( nee Allerton ). He married Mary Keeling, Stoke Upon Trent on 26th April 1834 and he was a Painter on pottery. He was charged for stealing and was sentenced to 7 years Transportation and went to Millbank Prison, London and was transported on the Convict Ship Adelaide in 1849 landing at Sydney. He was assigned to George Macleay and sent to the Toganmain Station in the Hay District of New South Wales. After serving the remainder of his sentence he worked his way down to Yea in North Central Victoria and worked on the Murrindindi Station for Alexander Miller before moving into the township of Yea and purchased 7 acres of land on the banks of Boundary Creek and the Yea River. In 1858 his wife and family arrived from England and made their way to Yea and in 1862 another son Herbert arrived with his wife Hannah and young family.Reuben was addicted to Chlorodyne which was used to swab the decks of the convict ships and he was seen adding this to a glass of wine at the Royal Mail Hotel at Yea and as a result went home and died on the 19th July 1877. He is buried in the Yea Pioneer Cemetery. Reuben Thorley was my G G G Grandfather.
