Biographies
John Tarlington was born in 1761 in Staffordshire, England.
He was a labourer living in Staffordshire when he was convicted at York Assizes for breaking into a warehouse. He received a term of 7 years transportation to Botany Bay. He was one of one hundred and six convicts transported on the Third Fleet ship 'Matilda', in January 1791.
He married his first wife Catherine Jackson in 1796 and they remained married until her death in March 1811. In December 1811 he married his second wife Margaret Duggan. John and Margaret were married for twenty three years until her death in February 1834.
In May 1834, at the age of 73, John applied to be married to the female convict Mary Ryan (herself a widow) but the application was denied. In 1837, at the ripe old age of 77, John married Mary who was only 27 years old. They had one child, a daughter Mary Ann born 1838, before Mary died at the young age of 31.
Over time, John rose above his early convict years and was able to purchase land in the surrounding districts of Sydney including Prospect. John and his son William (by Margaret) paid seven hundred pound cash in 1834 for a parcel of land in and around Prospect.
John had become a wealthy man by the time he died on November 25, 1842, in Parramatta, New South Wales, having lived a long life of 81 years.
