Biographies

Margaret Morgan was born around 1801 in County Down, Ireland. In March 1832 Margaret was tried for stealing money; she was sentenced to seven years transportation. According to the convict indents she was a single mother with one son and one daughter, however she was only allowed to bring baby Jane with her to New South Wales. Her son’s name and age is unknown, and she was forced to leave him behind. Margaret’s occupation was noted as country servant and she was described as a protestant who could read. Her complexion was noted as ruddy, pickpocked and freckled, she had dark brown hair and chestnut eyes. Scars were noted on her forehead and the side of her lip, as well as a burn scar near her right elbow.

Baby Jane became ill on the voyage to New South Wales. Upon arrival Margaret and Jane were sent to the Parramatta Female Factory. Baby Jane passed away and was buried at St John’s Parramatta in October 1833.

Margaret had two children whilst at the Parramatta Female Factory, the father of both children is unknown. A daughter Mary Ann Morgan was born on 12 December 1835 and baptised at St John’s Parramatta on 3 January 1836. Mary Ann was sent to the Parramatta Orphan School when she turned three. Margaret’s second Australian born child was a son she named Wyner Morgan. Wyner was born at the Parramatta Female Factory on 1 June 1838 and baptised at St John’s Parramatta on 1 July 1838.

On 22 April 1839, Margaret married 81 year old James Union at St John’s Parramatta. Following her marriage she retrieved daughter Mary Ann from the Parramatta Orphan School.

On 17 June 1840, Margaret received her certificate of freedom. Margaret passed away in May 1842 and her daughter Mary Ann was returned to the Parramatta Orphan School in April the following year. Mary Ann stayed at the orphan school until November 1849 when she was indentured to Mrs Bayly at Liverpool as a domestic servant. In 1862, Mary Ann married Robert Rixon in Campbelltown.

It is not known what happened to son Wyner Morgan.
