Biographies
When Thomas Ockenden was born in 1813 in Brighton, Sussex, England, his father, Thomas,1782-1849 was 30 and his mother, Margaret (Nee) Wells,1786-1863 was 26. Thomas was one of seven children five girls and two boys. He was convicted of housebreaking and larceny at Sussex Court age 21 was sentenced to Death 14 Dec 1833, however this was later commuted to Transportation for Life he spent one year
on the prison hulk Leviathan in Portsmouth Harbour, before being Transported on the Ship Norfolk 4Jul 1834 to Cork then transferred in Sept 1834 to Lady Kennaway then sailed 2nd Jun1836 with 301 prisoners including George Shoulder co accused Sussex Goal delivery ,arriving to Australia 12 Oct 1836 Hobart Tasmania after serving 11years and four months in the colony and two years and seven months holding a Ticket of Leave he was Pardoned continued for five years in service as a Hospital Orderly He arrived to New South Wales from Tasmania on the ship Lady Penwright in 1836 then moved to Geelong Victoria in 1850 .
He married Bridgett Handley aged 18 in 1851 Thomas was aged 38, in Geelong Victoria. They had 10 children during their marriage. He died on 25 July 1895 in Melbourne, Victoria, having lived a long life of 82 years, (the average life expectancy for a male at the time was 50 years old) and he was buried in Carlton North Cemetry.
