Biographies
Born 1832 in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland
Tried and convicted of highway robbery at Tipperary Assize 25 March 1831, sentenced to death, commuted to life imprisonment and transportation.
The Clonmel Herald "John Carthy, Michael Carty, Michael Brien, Wm. Lynch, and John Flynn pleaded Guilty to an indictment for assaulting and robbing Richard Grace of £34 10s on the 20th of last November (1830) at Carrick.on.Suir. Sentence of death recorded, but his Lordship promised to save their lives, and have them Transported for life. Twenty pounds was recovered from the culprits who desperately beat Grace, several of whose teeth they knocked out."
Arrived in Australia 09 February 1832 on convict ship Norfolk with 200 other convicts. Flinn was incarcerated in Sydney Goal for a short period where the Entrance Book describe him as being 5' 6" in height of stout build, light complexion, light hair and grey eyes. The Norfolk Convict Indent Book also describes John as having a scar across his left cheek and one over his right eye.
Indentured to Mr Henry Donnison, wealthy merchant of Sydney and later of Brisbane Waters near Gosford.
Granted Conditional Release on 01 November 1848 and moves to Victoria and becomes a gold miner.
Married Mary Ann McCormack in Dublin in 1831/32 and has two daughters, Mary Winnifred born in Dublin in 1833 and Catherine born 1834.
Mary Winnifred Flinn marries Richard Dunn in Melbourne on 12 January 1852.
On 03 March 1865 John Flinn and Richard Dunn work claim #744 at Cobblers Gully, halfway between Chewtown and Fryerstown, outside of Castlemaine.
Died 30 September 1877 The Springs, Bungaree Shire, Victoria, Australia.
