Biographies

After marrying James Hampton at Liverpool in 1845, Bridget ultimately died near Crookwell in 1883. Her death registration records her name as Bodelia Hampton (refer NSW BDM death reg. no. 5402/1883), shows her parents' names as John and Bodelia, and is registered at Crookwell.

Given that Bridget was Irish it seems possible that this name was actually an Anglicised version of her birth name. After she married it appears that there were some of her children' births registered using the name Bedelia (or variations on that) rather than what we understand was her name, while others simply used 'Bridget'.

Bedelia is a Celtic name meaning "strength or exalted one", and comes from the mythic goddess of fire and poetry. The Latinised/ Anglicised rendering as Bridget is seen in the 6th century Irish abbess St Bridget/ St Bride whose Celtic name is understood to have been Bedelia.
