Biographies
John Kearns was born 1814 in Hacketstown, County Wicklow, Ireland to unknown parents. In 1836 he married Johanna McDonald, also a native of Hacketstown. Between the period of 1837 - 1845 the pair had four children. On the 26th Of June 1845, John was convicted at the Queen's County Court of Justice, Leinster, for the theft of 110 Kilograms of potatoes. He was sentenced to seven years transportation to Van Diemens Land aboard the prison ship 'Samuel Boddington', which departed from Kingston, Ireland on the 23rd of September 1845. The ship arrived at Hobart on the 16th of January 1846, John was designated Prisoner No.17535 and assigned to the chain gang at Rocky Hills. At some point prior to 1848, John requested that his wife and four children be allowed passage to join him in Australia, on account of the famine that was occurring in Ireland at the time. The request was granted, John had received his ticket of leave at some point in-between, and Johanna gave birth to a fifth child at Spring Bay, Tasmania in 1849 as well as another on the 23rd of August 1851. On the 12th of July 1853, John was committed for trial at the Supreme court of Hobart for 'Maliciously Wounding' a member of the public, he was sentenced to eight months imprisonment, but received a full conditional pardon on the 12th of August 1853. John later became a shoemaker in Sorell, and between 1853 and 1856 John and Johanna produced another two children together. John died on the 2nd of April 1878 in Esperance, Tasmania after contracting Tuberculosis. His wife Johanna died on the 6th of April 1905.
