Biographies

Mary McKelvey was born in 1828 or 1829 in Tyrone. Her parents’ names were John and Isabella Matilda McKelvey.
She worked as a housemaid and had a de facto husband, John Valentine (or Balantine). Her son George was born in 1846.
In 1849 she was convicted of “Child murder – George Hill – drowned, Co Tyrone” No trial details can be found. It is likely that George Hill was the child of Mary’s employer She was exiled for life. In VDL she was assigned to two households and was given a ticket of leave after 3 years. She married John Thomas Lamb and had 4 more children. Her conditional pardon was issued in 1862. The family lived in Launceston. Mary died in 1908.
