Biographies

On 23 February 1864, Charles Ellis was convicted of Housebreaking and sentenced to 8 years. At the time he was a 36 year old miner, and he left behind in Sheffield his 29 year old wife, Susannah. Charles could read and write, and stated he was Presbyterian. He was described as being 5'7½" with light brown hair and hazel eyes; he had an oval shaped face and a sallow complexion and was stout. Charles has tattoos: a ship on his breast; fishes, flowers and a bracelet on his right arm, and a coat of arms, a flowers pot and keys on his left arm.
Charles was held in Chatham Prison before being transported to Western Australia on the Vimiera.
At the time of arrival in Western Australia on 22 December 1865, it was noted that he would be entitled to Ticket of Leave on 8 July 1868, however the time was extended - in 1866 it was extended by 28 days; in 1867 it was extended by 16 days for absconding (he later had to repay the £2 for his return ride) and in 1868, 4 days for possessing 2 bottles of rum; but the most notable was that he was part of a group of 4 prisoners who escaped from Warren Camp on 17 November 1866. This escape was reported in the newspapers of the time, including a journal written by one of the other absconders. Charles then spent 2 years in irons , from which he was released on 22 April 1868. Charles was finally released to Ticket of Leave 28 April 1869.
Over the next two years, he worked as a labourer and sawyer in Freemantle and Murray, most notably in Pinjarrah Park. The final date noted on his record was 10 August 1872.
Charles Ellis was a relatively common name around that time in England, so I have had difficulty confirming his family. Equally, I have also had difficulty tracking him after he was released in 1872, and so I am not sure where and when he was born and died.
