Biographies
MATTHEW GIBBS was born 1816 in Bridgewater, Somerset. He married (1) JANE TALBOTT in 1841. He married (2) MARY DOYLE 1856 in Victoria, Australia, daughter of MICHAEL DOYLE and CATHERINE. Mary was born 1836 in Carlowe, Ireland, and died 1896 in Shepparton, Australia.
He was an agricultural labourer and Lived at Puriton, Somerset, England
Matthew was transported to Australia for sheep stealing.
He was sentenced to 10 years at Wells Quarter Sessions on 25 March 1845 and was imprisoned in the hulks in Portsmouth until he sailed to Australia on the Thomas Arbuthnot on Jan 5 1847. The ship carried 289 male convicts.
Matthew married his second wife, Mary Doyle, bigamously in 1856 as was acceptable in the colony, they lived in Taradale, Victoria and also Arcadia, Victoria.
Matthew died in 1856
