Martin Ambrose Shannon was born in Ireland in about 1802. He was found guilty of stealing a pig in Dublin and was sentenced to seven years transportation to Australia.

Martin was granted in certificate of freedom on 6 November 1839 and settled in the Maitland area at Rosebank, near Hinton.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Martin Shannon was murdered in Dubbo on 12 February 1849. The murder took place in stables where Martin was beaten by William Murray following a disagreement.

Looking back over these notes I do not think this Martin Shannon was killed he died after being bitten by a snake when harvesting in the Maitland area of NSW

The Martin Shannon from the Herculese was the martin Shannon that died on the Hunter River. The one that died in Dubbo was NOT.
