Biographies

Samuel was convicted of stealing 5 pigs from his grandfather and sentenced to 7 years and transported.

He married Eliza (Elizabeth) Rooney, a fellow convict, in Feb 1853 following the birth of their first child - Jane.

They moved to Victoria (Bendigo) in 1853/4 and had a second child in 1855. They then moved to Avoca area (Lampough) and changed their name to Smith for reasons unknown.

Samuel was in and out of jail (generally for horse stealing). Eliza was charged and acquitted of manslaughter of her infant child.

Eliza left the family group and little more is known of her. Samuel gave his children to the state as wards. He died in 1900.
