Biographies
Joseph was born in Darfield, Yorkshire in 1793 and had numerous criminal charges brought against him during his lifetime mostly for poaching and petty theft. On 23 October 1826 he was sentenced to 7 years imprisoned on the Prison Hulk Cumberland for poaching. He was pardoned on 26 October 1830. In December 1842 he and his brother William Claypon Snr and nephew William jnr and several others we’re apprehended for night poaching. The Claypons were all sentenced to 7 years transportation to VDL but only Joseph was transported. He sailed on the Henrietta on 10 July 1843, arriving 10 November of the same year. During his time on VDL, he spend 18 months on probation on Maria Island before being sent to the probation station at Fingal. It is likely he was sent there to be part of the road gang that built the St Marys Pass road to St Helens but this is unconfirmed. Records show that Joseph died on 12 December 1846 in Fingal, when he was 53 years old. Cause of death is not recorded.
