NATIVE PLACE: A petition was put forward for leniency of sentence: "Convict is the sole support of his widowed mother and seven children residing in Polboy, Navan, Meath Co." The petition was unsuccessful. REF: Ireland-Australia Transportation Database CRF 1838 R 10

DATE OF BIRTH: The year 1817 taken from convict records, NSW BDM records of children and newspaper notices. Difficulty in obtaining further details as parish records for baptisms/marriages in Navan are not available, or do not exist for the particular year range required. Investigations continuing

OFFENCE: 22 February 1838 Thomas charged with "robbing the dwelling house of Patrick Clarke on the 19 Feb 1838 and feloniously taking there from: 3 shirts, a double blanket, 3 sheets, a waistcoat and house butter". Conviction Location: Meath Co. He and 3 others were found guilty of the offence. They were sentenced to 15 years transportation. REF: NSW and Tasmania: Settlers and Convicts 1787-1859

FUTURE WIFE: FUTURE WIFE: A Bounty scheme passenger list entry for a Jane Smyth, on the Champion, arriving Sydney, 10/12 Feb 1842. Jane is listed as being 18 yrs old, native place Kildare Co. Ireland, nursemaid, Protestant, could read and write, birth year 1824. REF: NSW Passenger List. Also on ship is Jane’s elder sister, Elizabeth, 26 yrs. Both girls are under protection of cabin passenger Miss PRICE. Death notice for Jane provides a birth date of 10 Feb 1823, Athenry, Galway Co. Parents: James SMYTH (policeman) and Elizabeth MC FADDEN TICKET OF LEAVE: Obtained 11 January 1845, allowed to remain in the District of Windsor (Richmond) REF: Ticket of Leave Butts 1827-1875 (Nrs 12202)

APPLICATION TO MARRY: 10 July 1845 Thomas made an "Application to Marry" to Jane Smyth (free emigrant), residence, Richmond – granted

CHILDREN: Thomas and Jane had 10 children, with 3 dying in childhood: Ann Jane – 1846; Thomas Edward – 1848 (D: 1853); James – 1847 (D: 1857); Maria E – 1851; William James – 1853; Elizabeth Badelia – 1855 (D: 1857); Eleanor L – 1858; John Henry – 1861; George Aubrey – 1862 (birth Cert.); Emily Isabel – 1870 (birth cert.). RESIDENCE: Newspaper notice indicates that Thomas was a resident of Richmond, NSW for 50 years.

DEATH: Thomas dies 25 February 1898 at his last residence 16 Jarrett St, Leichhardt, Sydney, NSW, aged 80 years REF: NSW BDM 1978/1898
