Joseph Ames was born in England about 1823 at St James, Pockthorpe, Norwich. There is a record for Joseph Ames at a House of Correction in West Wymer, Norwich, on the 1841 Census. He was about 17. On 4 Jan 1842 he was tried at Norfolk, Norwich city, for stealing and sentenced to 10 years. He embarked from Portsmouth for Australia on 1 Aug 1842 on the Moffatt after spending some time on a hulk. He arrived in Tasmania on 28 Nov 1842.
He was granted a Ticket of Leave in June 1848, a Conditional Pardon in Oct 1850 and was released in 1852.
He married Alice Farrell (daughter of a convict - Mary Farrell- from Armagh, Ireland) at St David's in Hobart Town on 9 Sept 1852. Both were illiterate but he had an occupation as a Sawyer.
He then changed his name to Thomas Smith and went to the goldfields in Victoria where he worked as a miner and Sawyer. He and Alice had 11 children, most of whom were born at Armstrong near Ararat, Vic. He later bought land in Northern Victoria at Waaia, near Sheparton, in about 1875. He died a few years later of a stroke in 1879 and 2 of his sons died in horse accidents soon after. Alice died in 1918.
