Biographies

Born 9th March 1818 in Misson Nottinghamshire to john & Mary Beardshaw.
Married John Capel on Christmas Day 1838
Convicted of attempted murder of John Needham her neighbor - “stabbing cutting & wounding with intent. Sentenced to 12 years transportation. For a little woman of 5’4” she obviously was strong. She left 4 children behind in England.
Transported on the ship Elizabeth & Henry. She was definitely not the perfect convict - regularly being given hard labor punishment. She spent most of her sentence at the Ross Women's Factory, where she gave birth to a child William on the 8th July 1850. Sadly William died at the age of 20 month as a result of sunburn.
On the 7 Apr 1853 she was granted permission to marry Thomas Edward Self (a former convict) then a Corn Dealer. They married st St George’s CofE Chruch Hobart . She was listed as 30 year old widow convict - while he was a 49 year old widower. They had 6 children
Elizabeth died on the 17th July 1880, at 1880 Collins Street Hobart being listed as a Shop Keeper.
