Biographies

Baptised with his twin sister Hannah on 22 May 1809 in Battle, Sussex, son of Thomas Pilbeam and Ann Brann. On Christmas Day 1830 married Esther Cox in Ewhurst Sussex.

By 1841 census they had two daughters and were living in Faversham, Kent where Thomas was a gunmaker.

In July 1841 Thomas was indicted for cutting Esther’s throat with the intent to murder her. Newspaper reports of the trial indicate it was a marital dispute that got out of hand. He was convicted of the lesser offence of intent to cause bodily harm and was sentenced to be transported for 15 years.

On 1 December 1841 he left for Van Dieman’s land on the John Brewer. Early in 1842 Esther gave birth to their youngest child, a son Edward, in Battle. In 1867 she married Stephen Mercer, a licensed victualler.

Thomas and Esther’s eldest child, Ann, married Benjamin Crow and emigrated to Queensland in 1864.

Nothing more is known by me about Thomas after his arrival in Van Diemans Land.
