Drowning of George Kelk in the Hawkesbury River 1889.
Transcribed from "Windsor & Richmond Gazette" 19 January 1889
"Sad Case of Drowning - On Thursday morning a nephew of the Messrs Greenwell, named George Kelk, and aged about 16, was accidentally drowned at Ben's Point whilst bathing. It appears that he went to the river about 6 o'clock with three of his cousins, and as he could swim, it is supposed that whilst in the water he took cramps and sank. The alarm was given and a good number of townspeople gave their assistance in attempting to recover the body. Boats were procured and all present worked well for 2 ½ hours when Mr John Ford secured the remains of the poor lad. Several men took to the water and endeavoured to recover the body by diving, but they were unsuccessful, owing to their inability to see, the water being muddy. Great credit is due to all who gave assistance. An inquest was held at the Fitzroy Hotel in the afternoon, when after a large number of witnesses had been examined, a verdict that deceased had been accidentally drowned was recorded. The deceased was a visitor to Windsor and we believe arrived only the previous night. His parents reside at Stanmore. Great sympathy is expressed for Mr S. T. Greenwell, at whose residence the deceased was located. The funeral took place at 3 o'clock on Friday, and a large concourse of townspeople and sympathisers followed the remains to the Wesleyan Cemetery at McGraths Hill. Mr R W Dunstan conducted the funeral. Mr Greenwell and the relatives of deceased have the heartiest sympathy of all the residence of the district."
